Plain-language definitions for common locksmith terms you might hear on the phone or see on our pricing page.
Rekey
Changing the internal pins of an existing lock so old keys no longer work, without replacing the whole lock hardware. Common after a move-in or when keys are lost.
Deadbolt
A lock bolt that moves in and out of the door frame without a spring, operated by a key or thumb-turn — more resistant to forced entry than a standard spring latch.
Transponder Key
A car key with a chip inside that communicates with the vehicle’s immobilizer system. The car won’t start without a transponder key it recognizes, even if the metal key cuts turn the lock.
Key Fob
A remote device used to lock, unlock, or start a vehicle. Some fobs also contain a transponder chip for the immobilizer system.
Master Key System
A commercial keying setup where individual keys open specific doors, while one master key opens all of them — common for property managers and multi-unit buildings.
Lockout
Being unable to get into a home, car, or business because the keys are lost, locked inside, or the lock has failed.
Ignition Repair
Fixing or replacing the mechanism a car key turns to start the engine, often needed after a key breaks off inside it or the cylinder wears out.
Panic Bar
A push-to-exit door bar required on many commercial doors, letting people exit quickly in an emergency without a key.
Smart Lock
An electronic lock that can be operated by a code, app, fob, or key, often allowing remote or scheduled access control.
Bonded
A form of financial guarantee a business carries that can compensate a customer if certain problems arise from the business’s work — separate from insurance.
Broken Key Extraction
Removing a key that has snapped off inside a lock or ignition without damaging the lock cylinder.
Access Control
Commercial systems (keypads, fobs, card readers) that manage who can enter a building or area and when.
